Live Sync rocks my socks off…
I’ve been stuck at home in the snow a few days this week, which has given me lots of time to work on getting all those things I never get around to done, like organizing all my documents, photos, and music collections. I’ve often been frustrated by trying to pull something up and finding that it’s on another computer. With Live Sync, it’s not a problem. I’ve checking out ways to make this happen for about 10 years, and this is by far the easiest, and the price doesn’t get any better than free! if you haven’t tried it out yet, check out Live Sync at sync.live.com
Just download the free sync utility, sign in with your free window live id, and choose which folders you would like to sync via web across as many PCs as you want. you can also login to sync.live.com with your live id to pull up your files from any web-enabled computer. at least one computer that has the files needs to be online for this to work. if you’ve got a large collection of stuff, I’d recommend adding one folder of it at a time rather than doing everything at once so you can be sure to get those critical folders first. live sync will take a little while to work it’s magic since it’s transferring things through your web connection, and since both machines have to be online at the same time you may want to leave them on overnight to give it time to work. I’ve been leaving it on at night for a week now and it’s transferred nearly 30 gb of stuff for me with absolutely no problems, except when I was deleting folders as I realized it was duplicating some things.
long story short, live sync is a fantastic utility, and if you’re patient enough to let it copy everything for you over a few days, then you can easily merge folders to make sure you wind up with the most current version of everything. keep in mind that unless you have 30gb worth of pics, docs, music, and stuff, you should have a literally 3 step process- download, install, choose folders, and enjoy!
Live mesh is the beta taking live sync a few steps further. Live Mesh supports Windows Mobile and Mac, as well as giving you 5gb of free online storage, which you can access whether you have a PC with the files online or not. Oh yeah, Live Mesh also lets you actually login to and run your computer remotely, so if you need to work with a file that you’re not able to since you don’t have the program installed on the computer your at (you know, in case you need to redesign that skyscraper in autocad from the library or something) you’re able to run remote desktop with very minimal configuration, again it’s basically download/install, sign-in, and enjoy!
I put my docs and pics in my mesh since those are the things I want to make sure I absolutely never lose (again), and can always pull up online from any computer.
